Do you have a writer's dog park to play in?

We're members of a local writer's group where all the members spend an hour writing first drafts.  On occasion both of us write about our family member, an adopted dog we named Leaf.  It is relaxing to write about this dog.  We enjoy expressing our observations of the small things he does and the experiences Leaf has as he lives out his teenage years in our home.

Leaf loves his visits to the dog park.  He plays with any dog who will mix it up with him.  First-draft writing in this group has become our own version of the dog park experience.  With first-draft writing there are no requirements or rules, no need to sit and stay.  Treats come without working hard for them.  After all, first draft only means fun, play, and oftentimes, just being silly.

Leaf's playfulness at the dog park reminds us to engage in our own dog park experience.  This is where fun and play are the priority, even if it only happens once a week.
