Do you have a niche market for what you love to write?

One of Linda's book coaching clients has had to face an interesting dilemma this week.  Perhaps it is something you have also found challenging.  The client must decide if she will write a big book that requires a proposal and much time and effort spent courting an agent and a publisher or a littler book that appeals to a niche market. The littler book could be sold on the basis of her substantial credentials with this niche to a small publisher, probably with only a good cover letter.

If you have a substantial platform, which means you are already reaching or can easily market to a group of readers who would absolutely love to buy your book, you may be writing a niche book. These are faster and easier to write and sell.  They tend to make less money.  You might have to self-publish.  They are tougher to distribute because most bookstores won't buy and sell them. But if you want to get your feet wet in publishing and you don't want to spend as much time writing a proposal as you would take to write the book, a niche market may be the most expeditious and profitable way for you to go.
